The Boiler Hotel

The Boiler Hotel

This project focuses on the re-use of one of Eugene’s most historic buildings, the E.W.E.B. Steam Plant. This building was constructed in 1931, is located in close proximity to the University of Oregon, Downtown Eugene, Autzen Stadium, and sits on the banks of the Willamette River. I re-designed this building as a Boutique Hotel that would stand as a landmark for all of Eugene. This involved testing how feasible a hotel would be in relation to the site, local businesses, tourism, and the limitations of the existing building. By preserving the envelope of the existing building and transforming the interior, I was able to create a hotel with an industrial feel. My design also makes use of the original boiler and one of the large turbines as feature pieces. The Boiler Hotel connects the riverfront with a mixed-use ground floor that includes an atrium, restaurant, rentable office spaces, commercial spaces, and hotel amenities. The large existing windows give hotel guests clear views to the river and maintain the historic character of the building.

Finley Wildlife Education Center

Finley Wildlife Education Center

Located in Oregon’s beautiful Willamette Valley, the Finley Wildlife Education Center brings the classroom to the outdoors. Designed for both students and the public, this complex houses a Welcome Center, Dining Hall, Exhibit Hall, Student and Staff lodging, an indoor classroom, and outdoor learning spaces. Week-long student programs are designed for Elementary and Middle schoolers who want to learn more about Oregon wildlife. Sustainability and innovative learning are areas where this project excels. This is achieved through the use of drainage systems and bioswales, passive heating systems, and flexible-use spaces. This education center looks outwards and encourages interaction with the environment, boasting stunning views of an upland oak savanna, and providing access to the popular “Woodpecker Trail”. With animals left free to roam the site, it would not be surprising to encounter wildlife during a stay at the lodges. The Finley Wildlife Education Center demonstrates how nature and architecture can work synergistically to create a memorable experience.

Bush School Additions

Bush School Additions

Working off of reference drawings for a proposed school addition, this project focused on the design of the building envelope. This proposal includes a brick veneer facade, low-slope green roof, and a pitched roof with concealed gutters. I chose to implement a glulam structure, Cascadia 400 Series triple glazed windows, and a standing seam pitched roof. This addition will include a multi-use "social commons", multiple classrooms, a kitchen, and below-grade spaces. I was also tasked with selecting a specific brick module and blend to create a seamless facade with appropriately placed expansion joints and windows.
