Located in Oregon’s beautiful Willamette Valley, the Finley Wildlife Education Center brings the classroom to the outdoors. Designed for both students and the public, this complex houses a Welcome Center, Dining Hall, Exhibit Hall, Student and Staff lodging, an indoor classroom, and outdoor learning spaces. Week-long student programs are designed for Elementary and Middle schoolers who want to learn more about Oregon wildlife. Sustainability and innovative learning are areas where this project excels. This is achieved through the use of drainage systems and bioswales, passive heating systems, and flexible-use spaces. This education center looks outwards and encourages interaction with the environment, boasting stunning views of an upland oak savanna, and providing access to the popular “Woodpecker Trail”. With animals left free to roam the site, it would not be surprising to encounter wildlife during a stay at the lodges. The Finley Wildlife Education Center demonstrates how nature and architecture can work synergistically to create a memorable experience.
