The Superior Street Sports Park is designed as a vibrant activity hub adjacent to Toledo's major sports venues. Its primary purpose is to capitalize on the city's strong sports culture by providing a destination for fans before and after games. The park extends economic and social activity beyond the stadiums, with defined zones for recreation and gathering. It also functions as a daily community anchor, encouraging regular use with integrated seating and greenery. Furthermore, its custom designs, like columns featuring team logos, strengthen the district's identity and improve wayfinding.
This component introduces residential density to support a vibrant, 24/7 live-work-play community. The "liner" building hides a necessary parking structure behind active ground-floor uses and living spaces. This strategy maintains an engaging, pedestrian-friendly streetscape by screening the garage. The green roof on top provides a recreational amenity for residents while delivering environmental benefits. It contributes to sustainability by managing stormwater, reducing the urban heat island effect, and adding biodiversity.
The Toledo Arts Gallery & Studios establishes a dedicated cultural anchor within the district. It aims to diversify the area's appeal beyond sports by attracting artists, residents, and a different demographic of visitors. This facility reflects Toledo's rich heritage by providing space for exhibition and artistic creation. Its design includes public plazas and courtyards to foster civic engagement and passive recreation. Ultimately, it serves as a key placemaking element that revitalizes community identity through art.
