Mixed and Adaptive Re-use

Location & Program: The project is located at the near west side, Chicago, IL. The mission is to keep Epiphany Church and Parish hall and give these two building new programs and use existing Chase and Higgins parcel to enbed a new concept to the community. Concept: The building has a strong connection with the old traditional church and shows both similarity and comparison. They shared some similar space and texture pattern, at the same time, light and mass volumes both exist in the building for privacy requirement and opposite spatial quality.

Front elevation

MASS & LIGHT Based three-volumns layout, we try to think from in-side to outside. How the mass and light volumns meet ground? How to show the caparison from outside? Bacause of the garden stair, the mass box on south side is elevated tow floors up by columns and starts at the unit floor. On the other side of high rise, the mass wall have to touch the ground because the cores are included in this mass volume. This volume is supposed to be exposed to side walk so that in human scale, when walking or driving pass the build-ing, people can tell the rhythm of the light and mass space. The church is absolutely mass. Therefore, it is better if one light box can break the mass tendency between mass volumns on north side of new building and the church, so that the rythem of “mass-light-mass” can start from the church side and extends to the very south side of site.
