This studio course is part of a comprehensive engagement initiative, exploring architecture’s impact on community, education equity, sustainability, and urban structures. It promotes collaboration, as students engage with professionals and stakeholders, drawing insights from seminars. The core theme is transformation, specifically rethinking the relocation of the John D. O’Bryant School to the dormant West Roxbury Education Center. Proposals focus on adapting the structure to O’Bryant’s needs and prioritizing student input.
An inventory was taken at the beginning of the project on the existing multi-height spaces due to the spaces not being articulate on the facade (left). Nearing the end of our project we took another inventory of our interventions to compare it to the existing inventory. While speaking to our students at the O'Bryant school, they expressed their discomfort with the crowded hallways. Our solution was to create pull-over spaces in the hallways where students could pull over and take themselves away from the busy hallways—taking that concept and expanding it to four different scales that are consistent throughout the project.
The preceding index delineates the strategic locations our architectural team chose to manifest our interventions. Comprising a total of six carefully curated interventions, it serves as a comprehensive showcase encapsulating the entirety of the project.
The existing corridor unveils a double-height expanse adjacent to an existing courtyard. Our architectural vision discerns the ideal juxtaposition of a breakout space within the hallway, harmonizing seamlessly with the proximate courtyard.
