The Birdcage

Year: 2023

My partner and I were very interested in creating a double-skin facade. While having exposed structure. Creating this while also having a thermal break was challenging. Still, after discussing with consultants, we decided to create a decoy structure on the outside to cosmetically show the structure but still have a thermal break.

Double Skin Parti

Implementing a double-skin facade on a building facing a river can offer several significant advantages. The dual layers of glass can enhance thermal insulation, contributing to improved energy efficiency by providing an additional barrier against external temperature fluctuations. This is particularly beneficial near bodies of water where weather conditions might vary. The facade's design can also capitalize on the scenic river views, allowing for controlled natural ventilation and daylight harvesting, creating a visually pleasing and environmentally responsive building envelope.

Exploded Wall Axon

During discussions with consultants, incorporating a cosmetic structure on the exterior emerged as a strategic solution to establish a thermal break for the entire building. While serving an aesthetic purpose, this outer layer plays a crucial role in insulating the structure from external temperature influences. By acting as a thermal barrier, the cosmetic structure helps regulate heat transfer, contributing to improved energy efficiency within the building. This approach not only underscores the significance of sustainable design but also highlights the integration of aesthetic elements as functional components in the overall thermal performance of the structure.

Wall Ventilation

Integrating two widths within our double-skin facade presents a multifaceted solution that enhances pedestrian circulation and ventilation. The varying widths create an engaging architectural rhythm that is aesthetically pleasing and strategically accommodating for pedestrian movement. More comprehensive sections can be designed as inviting pockets, encouraging people to pause and enjoy the surroundings fostering a dynamic pedestrian experience. Simultaneously, the narrower sections facilitate the building's efficient airflow and natural ventilation.

Merrimack St. Perspective

The perspective above offers a striking view from the main road, showcasing our innovative glazing and double-skin facade. From this vantage point, the architectural design comes to life, capturing the attention of passersby with its dynamic play of widths and textures. The intentional variation in the facade not only serves a functional purpose in optimizing ventilation but also creates a visually engaging and aesthetically pleasing experience for those approaching from the main road.
