Fair Balance House

Year: 2022

This section will briefly look into the year 1 project which spanned over 3 terms. The upcoming portions will be as such site analysis, massing design and refining chosen massing design. Our project was to design a house for a given imaginary client around their personality. My client Daniel Lim is a freelance gym trainer who lives with his girlfriend. He loves to cook and grow his own vegetables during his free time as this helps to calm himself down. He also like to produce music with his friends during the weekends as it helps him stay in touch with everyone and his passion as well.

Site analysis

The image above briefly shows the surrounding environmental site conditions. Site is located along Commonwealth Avenue West near Dover Forest. There is an abundance of sunlight and prevailing winds present on site. The increased amount of vegetation in the area increases the humidity in the area, acts as a natural sound barrier from the nearby roads and also helps to cool the temperatures down of surrounding entities. The only concern is privacy as there is a bus stop and Dover MRT located fairly close to the site. My assigned site was plot 5 which is the furthest away from civilization (away from the brown walkway). Since privacy is not a concern deep into the site I decided to capitalize on other environmental factors for the designs for my massing.

Massing design stage

The Drawings above show the different variations of designs I started off with and slowly worked my way to the best three massing choices. Out of which one of them was brought on to further evaluation. The text shown next to drawings talk about the spatial importance within the areas and the pros and cons of the design itself.

Evaluation of final design

After consultation with the teachers and surrounding peers I tweaked my final design to include factors of all three of the previous designs. This change was truly made to differentiate and clearly show the contrast between two different types of spaces the private and public ones. Since my client has a mix of both public and private activities in his lifestyle. The clash between the private and public spaces would not be ideal in his situation. Therefore, I shifted the spaces in a manner such that the house becomes two different massing. one soley for public use and one soley for private use.

Final finished renders of the house

As we can see from the renders the private and public spaces are more clearly defined with the darker and more closed our spaces indicating the private ones and the lighter and more open spaces showcasing the public spaces. The material use, texture and color of the materials have all been accounted for to help clearly differentiate the spaces. With the spaces in between like the communal dining space and the garden spaces being the neutral spaces helping to draw a faint yet prominent line between the two types of spaces. Hence the name Fair Balance House
