In the bustling heart of Vienna, near the Donau Canal, Building 1.0 offers our take on sustainability and adaptability through architecture. The whole structure is half temporary, reflecting the fast-paced, ever-changing world we live in. The academy is like a "software" for buildings, as it can be quickly updated and adapted to fit educational, social, and urban evolving needs. The temporary section can be easily taken apart and rebuilt for different purposes, such as providing housing for refugees our hosting a summer festival when classes are not in session. Roof openings ensure that everything built under the public terrace will be ventilated and enlightened sufficiantly. By breaking away from traditional, fixed architecture, Building 1.0 mirrors the flexibility and adaptability seen in modern technology. This design is our take on how architecture should evolve with the times. We dont design a building that fits one need perfectly, we design every building all at once. This project was part of the studio "Gebäudelehre" | Open Design Academy. We, Marlon Berger & August Eckmann, finished it in the fifth's semester of our Bachelor of Architecture.
The section of the design university at Hermanpark in Vienna is designed to promote communication and academic exploration. The horizontal organization of the two-story MAT building allows for easy movement and interaction between the various modular rooms. The use of a concrete frame provides structural stability, while the roof made of openable aluminum panels allows for natural light and ven-tilation, creating a bright and airy atmosphere. With its location in the first district of Vienna, the university faces the challenges of operating in a dense urban environment with a high demand for public access and use. The temporary nature of half of the building ensures that resources are used efficiently, while also providing the flexibility to adapt to changing circumstances (pandemic, digital learning...). The modular design also allows for easy dismantling and repurposing of the building components. Informal and unconventional. Academic exchange has always thrived in low- rise environments, and will continue to do so. The building is neither an art-work, nor a „masterpiece“ by a starchitect. But somehow it still functions !?
No class? No stress. Public terraces, bars, theaters, pools, concerts..... all by the water. The options are almost limitless. To make the design work from the start, we proposed one central solution, one „backup“, that always works. The starting point of „Building X.X“. It focuses on clear circulation and easy orientation. But who knows what the future brings. The central circulation axis of the design university at Hermanpark serves as a versatile boulevard, able to accommodate a variety of activities. In addition to facilitating pedestrian traffic, the boulevard can also accommodate vehicle traffic, such as a truck bringing in equipment for a concert or event. This flexibility enables the university to host a wide range of activities, from academic events to cultural performances and more.
