Sited in the historic Manchester neighborhood of Manhattan, I sought to reimagine, and revitalize what in meant to "fit in" to this historic neighborhood. Rather than elect to use the traditional model of the rowhouse in this effort, I noticed the uneven brickwork along the various party walls throughout the site. Within these party walls are uneven, messy brickwork, scars of sister buildings that stand no more. Through the extrusion of these wonderful imperfections, I sought to breathe new life into the masonry.
Within this project, I heavily focus on the stylization between black and white, to emphasize exactly what was extruded within the context of the party wall. This axonometric demonstrates the powerful feeling of the extruded masonry, as well as the unique feeling of ruin that the messy brick naturally wants to take.
This elevation illuminates and highlights the contrast between the clean and unclean brickwork, indicated what was and what wasn't meant to be seen. On top of that, one can really begin to see the details within the imperfect masonry, and imagine what shapes or unique qualities the groupings of bricks can begin to take
Within the unique form described by the exterior, the navigation and program of the interior begin to take shape. At any point within the inside, one's experience of the project is defined by the great and complex history of the outer shell of the residence. The history of the neighborhood will always be around the building's inhabitants.
