The design for the Barnacle Historic State Park project was inspired by the park's natural beauty and the small, pavilion-style structure. It incorporates natural materials such as wood and stone to match the existing architecture and environment. The form is informed by my passion for figure drawing, while features pay homage to the park's namesake building for a cohesive design.

Inspiration

The art studio design is a nod to the athleticism and beauty of Olympic diving, taking inspiration from the elegant posture of a diver mid-dive. The sweeping lines and curves of the building translate this dynamic pose into a structure that exudes creativity and movement.

Site Plan

The design of the art studio seamlessly integrates with the existing path on site, guiding visitors through the diver's form. A covered walkway opens up to the lush nature around, where the front desk and gallery occupy the first section, featuring large windows that allow for natural light. The second area is dedicated to the art studio, with ample natural lighting and a stunning dome paying homage to the Barnacle while adding a unique touch. The third section provides sufficient space for storage and supplies, while the fourth area boasts a captivating water feature and a raised stage, ideal for figure drawing sessions during favorable weather conditions.

Isometric Rendering

The philosophy behind the design is to employ a straightforward mimetic approach, where the floorplan of the building imitates that of a diver, while still maintaining the key elements that are pertinent to the site. The use of this approach allows for harmonious integration of the building with the environment, resulting in a design that not only blends seamlessly with the site but also celebrates the graceful form of a diver.
