Japan, Gunma, Nakanojo: A rural town facing abandonment is in need of reviving its touristic sector and benefiting from the traditional wisdom of its elderly. An old school site is subject to renovation in hopes of reviving the area. Being the national drink of japan, we took on a sake brewery project to define the town’s unique identity and attract visitors. The Sake Brewery adapts a unique form and unforgettable experience birthed from the surrounding abandoned structure and the sake making process An industrial steel red parasite follows through the journey of making sake discovering along the way the beautiful foliage and landscape.
The main part of the project, is the old school which was repurposed to house the fermentation, distillation, and pasteurization steps of the sake brewing. This breathtaking historical building was reimagined to be experienced in a new unexpected setting. A daring take on an otherwise reserved site.
To house the several steps of sake brewing, the project reimages some abandoned structures in close proximity. An engaging labyrinth is thus created.
An underground theatre where the rice steamer is covered when not in use to create the stage. A sky light that escapes the steam doubles as a center light for the stage. In addition to that the theatre equipped with a unique music instrument which resulted from the mix of the steamer chimney and a church organ. A sensual religious experience.
A peek at the private koji ritual through an interactive wall. Tables and seating that extend from inside to outside small windows and fisheye lenses that discreetly break the secrecy of the setting. Inside the polished copper walls help control the tempreture and humidity, important for the process.
