Year: 2021
In this project, I started to explore the vast possibilities in the relationship between drawing and architectural design through Italian architect Lina Bo Bardi. Her artistic sensibility were imbued with idea that architecture is the place for social interaction and that the role of designers is to create opportunities to enhance everyday life. Her "architectural container" idea inspired me. So I developed a collective market that expanded the seasonally influenced, a four-season celebration of nature.
The design concept is to address the food desert problem in St.louis. By inventing urban farming, I built up the market from bottom to top throughout different phases. As a result, it contains food market, cookery school, retails, and food health library to maximize community benefits by providing affordable food and food education to various groups. Further, it provides job opportunities and give back liveliness to the community.
In my perception of her, I believe she perceive architecture as "container." For example, In sesc Pompia, she considered the existing old metal barrel factory as a container that maintain and promote vital activities and better represent local culture. She made it into a inviting cultural and sports complex, letting it to become part of this ‘little joy in a sad city.’ Later in my design, I took this idea of "Architecture container" idea, intended to apply her sensibility into my design approach. Responding to her architectural sensibility and St.Louis food desert problem, I designed a collective market, which is a process orientated architectural container that respond to site, seasons, people, and community. The furnitures and plants pods are movable.
To understand the community's needs, I design a collective game that consist of five players, Four of them are randomly selected representatives from the community. One is the architect. The programs are decided by democratic voting among all residents living in this community. For the formation rule, the darker the grid, the higher the number of votes, the more likely it is to become a future function.
Food desert, a common issue meaning that there is no affordable grocery store within a 1-mile walking distance. So I chose the S Vandeventer Ave for several reasons: First, I found out there are necessities such as Getaway greening, a city garden organization, so that I can share their tool store.
Second, there are bus stops within 0.5-mile walking distance.Third, there are dense multi-family dwellings, consisting mostly minorities community, that need affordable food. In phase one, there is only urban farming within the market. Later, there would be other programs such as food health library, cookery school, mobile market, self- serving restaurant, etc.
