Year: 2021
From the end of 2020 till now, I have worked with the architecture school of Nanjing University to design a "village living room" for a rural revitalization project in Fujian Province, China.
Due to globalization, many villages in China are currently hollowing out; Seeing the phenomenon, we first began to combat the issue by raising money from the government to make this place more lively through an architectural approach.
In 2021 spring, to comprehend the project's complexity, I site visited Fujian several times, spent time with the local villagers, and observed their daily routines. While with the help from the history team, I found out Fujian is a place filled with rich engraving art culture.
"We used to hold temple fair once a year, our grandest ceremony... in this abandoned school. The elderly at home would prepare hand-craft engraving art pieces for months and sold them in the fair." Da Gui, a villager, said. They need a place to bring people together, a quality place that sparks emotional attachments and thrives when local villagers have a range of reasons to be there.
