The Hive

This project builds up on the Urban Magnet master plan. It seeks to desegn a creative hub that is included in the master plan proposal while retaining the existing building. The Hive will support creative individuals at all stages of their journey - from enthusiasts and recently graduated to established personnel. The Hive aims to provide a wide range of facilities as well as create a space that would encourage the formation of a community spirit in order to improve the living conditions in the area. It aims to attract not only businesses but also students from BCU who want to strengthen their creativity skills outside the university as well as locals who have nothing to do with the creative industries but simply want to gain new skills and explore their abilities. The Hive would act as a platform to boost the socio-economic fabric of Digbeth.

There are 4 types of spaces in The Hive: Specialist facilities (FabLab, workshop spaces), Rentable spaces (permanent studios, affordable self-build studio pods), Collaborative spaces (The Floating Studios) and Services and administration (offices, reception, storage rooms).

In the floating pods

The design of the collaborative studio explores the connection between privacy and collaboration. It aims to create a place that encourages creativity and creates a team spirit within its users but at same time giving them the option to work on their own. In a way it encourages creativity through observation. A group of people working together and occasionally chatting with each other - this sums up a typical collaborative studio environment and the design is a reinterpretation of this concept.

The self-build studio pods

The idea of the flexible studio units is to allow people to design and build their own working space. At the same time it provides the flexibility to expand their business over time without having to worry about moving to a new office or looking for an affordable alternative. The low-cost DIY-studios in The Hive will provide a long-term adaptable alternative to the traditional fixed offices.

A craft shop

The crafts street forms one of the main pedestrian routes below the building. It consists of small affordable units for rent (ca. 40sqm). They are aimed at crafters who are looking for a place to showcase and sell their work. They could even split the space in two and have a small dedicated workshop in the back that overlooks the canal and promenade.
