Lantern
Lantern, inspired by Kengo Kuma’s 120x120 Forest, is a model for a small residential home composed of modular prefabricated sections constructed out of a 120x120mm structural wooden lattice which is enclosed by structurally insulated panels (sips). The small site located in a model home park in Japan will benefit from off site construction where the modules will be shipped in allowing for a quick construction time. This project allowed me to focus on a small palette of materials and the Japanese culture to produce details to improve my understanding of the building system. The striking facade serves as a bold graphic tying it back to its precedent project while being a homage to traditional Shoji screens used to regulate light and shading, as well as privacy and add to the layered systems that comprise the structure.
