Sunset Serenades and Scholarly Solitude: Throughout our area, we wanted to showcase what Arizona is known for, sunsets. Knowing how much Tempe is a tourist attraction, we placed specific sunset bridge viewpoints along the Avain Library to be able to embrace what Arizona is greatly known for. This was another one of the elements heavily considered on this amazing site.

Learning in the Lap of Nature: Our vision extends beyond the confines of walls, with ecological islands serving as dynamic outdoor classrooms. Here, the focus is on ecology and conservation, offering a hands-on learning experience that blurs the line between education and immersion.

Innovative Spatial Exploration: We wanted a location that people were drawn to and could be noticed from a distance, so we developed our building layout to be a mystery. We aimed to create a place where one could virtually feel disoriented and removed from the city. A place to decompress and forget about their stresses.

Architectural Inspirations: Drawing inspiration from the organic flow of Grace Farms and the raw, uncompromising strength of brutalist architecture, our project is a dance of contrasts. It's where the fluidity of natural forms meets the solidity of concrete, where dynamic curvature and reflective patterns play with light and shadow, crafting a space that not only stands but flows. This library is not merely a building; it's a journey, a conversation, a place where the raw strength of concrete is tempered by the fluidity of design. It's a space that invites engagement, urging visitors to see, touch, and experience the space in an immersive manner.

A Symphony of Nature and Design: As we developed our ideas, we wanted to be sure to focus on our primary objective, which was to create a location that simultaneously blends architectural design with a quiet, non-polluted atmosphere. We envisioned a garden oasis in which you could take in the many rhythms of the singing birds and the relaxing movement of the swimming fish, building a peaceful environment and improving your reading/meditation experience.

A Window to the Wild: The design incorporates forced perspective architecture, strategically crafted to draw the eye and spirit towards the island habitats. It's a design that not only enjoys but educates, transforming every glance out the window into a lesson in biodiversity and conservation. Central to this sanctuary are the large, enveloping windows that frame the natural beauty of Tempe Town Lake. These expansive windows do more than offer views; they dissolve the boundaries between the inside and the outside, filling the space with natural light and bringing the tranquil ambiance of the lake into the library. The effect is a seamless integration with the environment, allowing patrons to study, read, or be, in a space that feels both expansive and intimately connected to the natural world

Nests of Knowledge: Delve into literature from the comfort of hanging reading pods that we call Nests of Knowledge. These unique spaces offer a “bird's-eye view” of the world, encouraging observation, inspiration, and contemplation.
