Komorebi; the beauty and wonder of rays of light dappling through overhead leaves, casting dancing shadows on the forest floor. Solis’ design is based on this Japanese word, highlighting the beauty of play between lights and shadows. This is done by having letters carved out from the wood panels creating a beam of light passing through them. By doing this, the highlight is on the letters and the depth of the messages being transmitted to the users. Because of the planned expansion and modernization of Surrey, the pavilion assures a safe gateway between present and future where the community can find themselves through inspirational quotes and gather around. The use of anchored concrete blocks are to represent how deep and important it is to keep the roots of the city even in the modernization and also to bring back the brutalist part of surrounding buildings such as the Simon Fraser University and the Surrey Central Library. On the other hand, the wood depicts the New Surrey that is malleable, warm and allows to bring natural elements within a part of the city that severely lacks green. Another important feature of Solis is having lightly carved quotes from poets and public personalities from the region on the concrete anchors. Also, the pavilion is designed around two organically shaped “walls” creating a path to allow people to walk through and experience the cultural and artistic display of lights and shadows.
