Welcome Diversity

Category: Cultural Architecture

The idea of this proposal is to create a sinuous path surrounded by a multitude of cylindrical mirrors with different diameters and heights. The cylinders can be painted metal or treated to obtain a reflective chrome surface. Surrey is an example that it is possible to generate a united community even with different people, and the pavilion will be a symbol of hope and integration for its inhabitants and new visitors.

The winding path represents the sometimes difficult and not very clear path that immigrants must follow to adapt to a new city and new lifestyle. To give dynamism to the route of the pavilion, the floor of the path will be painted in a gradient of four colors that represent the transition of the four seasons that are experienced in a marked way in Canada, spring, summer, autumn and winter. The change in color on the ground will also be reflected by the cylinders giving a different feel to each section of the course.

Inside the pavilion

The concept of diversity will be reflected precisely by the difference in the dimensions of the cylinders, no cylinder will be exactly the same as another. For every immigrant, the feeling of loneliness and isolation is common. By multiplying the reflections of the cylinders, the pavilion welcomes everyone with a silent but clear message: “You are not alone, more people like you live here".

Some of the cylinders will be crowned with a luminous bubble powered by solar energy. During the night these bubbles will illuminate the pavilion and, through the reflection of the cylinders, will multiply their brightness and quantity, giving the illusion of walking through a constellation of stars.
