When considering the use of a patio, it's often seen as merely a platform for storage, relaxation, or simply a passageway with limited engagement. Even when people use the patio to unwind and admire the scenery of their backyard, there's often minimal interaction between the space and its users. We've observed that patios, while positioned close to buildings, exist somewhat independently without fully integrating into their surroundings. Our concept, the "garden gym" seeks to change this by introducing elements that encourage greater interaction. By incorporating hammocks of varying heights and angles supported by wooden posts, we provide opportunities for people to climb, rest, and enjoy different perspectives of their surroundings. The wooden post frames create unique visual frames, enhancing the experience of each hammock's position. In a city like Vancouver, where weather changes are frequent and dynamic, the "garden gym" offers a chance for people to connect with their outdoor space and experience the shifting weather throughout the day. This concept aims to motivate individuals to engage more actively with the environment around them. In addition, we envision bringing more greenery to the patio by installing planters beneath the hammocks on the deck. These planters will host vines that, over time, will climb the wooden posts and envelop the space, further integrating nature into the outdoor experience.
