Pavilion in the city .... for passing as well as for halting ......... situates itself as part of the larger urban fabric while distinctively asserting itself as a folly. Originally conceived as a floating urban canopy, 52 HERTZ pays homage to the canopy above the sky train from across City Parkway and engages the ground with a minimal footprint. The canopy-marked passageway encourages movement along the north-south axis, echoing the flow of the adjacent sky train. Subsequent formal manipulations are intended to entice pedestrians to linger and interact with the pavilion. The resulting form evokes the graceful skeleton of a whale and creates an urban icon that’s simultaneously captivating and welcoming.
