6-Story Residential Building with basement, Al Houda, Tangier

During my tenure at ABDO NORD SARL, I contributed to the development of a 6-story residential building in Tangier's Lotissement Al Houda. My role primarily involved creating specific 2D architectural drawings and participating in on-site management. This work provided me with invaluable insights into the translation of design concepts into real-world structures and the practicalities of urban construction. My involvement in this project, though focused on certain aspects of the building process, significantly enriched my architectural experience and understanding, particularly in the practical application of design principles in an urban setting.

Earthwork operations, a critical initial phase in construction, involve modifying the terrain through excavation and backfilling, setting the stage for foundation work. The foundations are crucial as they bear the entire load of the building and distribute it to the ground, forming the most vital part of the construction process. Before pouring the concrete, certain preparatory steps are essential. This includes laying a polyane film, which acts as a vapor barrier to prevent moisture issues, and applying a 5cm layer of clean concrete without steel reinforcement to create a flat and stable base. Subsequently, reinforcing bars are carefully placed, ensuring an adequate concrete cover is maintained. This concrete cover is key to protecting the steel from environmental damage and corrosion, thus preserving the structural integrity of the building. The photos included in this documentation capture the development of these foundational steps, highlighting the meticulous progress from the initial groundwork to establishing the building's core structure.

In this construction project, the 25x25 cm columns, made with 14 mm longitudinal reinforcement and 8 mm ties, are key for bearing horizontal seismic and wind loads. These columns have a 3cm concrete cover, and after reinforcing, skilled workers set up the formwork, ensuring stability during concrete pouring. The slab, a crucial horizontal element, supports both operational and permanent loads. Its preparation involves setting up supports and formwork, followed by laying double layer mesh reinforcement with 20.5 and 20 cm spacings, embedding conduits for electrical installations, and incorporating a 20 cm drop. For the walls, 8-hole hollow bricks are used, with interior partitions made of simple hollow bricks. Masonry is done with 20x20x40 cm blocks and 2 cm mortar, ensuring proper alignment and structural integrity.
