An environmental house designed to intuitively engage with site and environment following its own natural rhythm. Form and function are born out of unique site conditions and human daily program. This house can only exist in this particular location, environment, and seasons. Limited WIFI, contemplative, seclusion, natural elements, and circadian rhythm. A dwelling designed to turn off from a manic information driven world (for a while), tune into its natural environment, and in doing so, tunes into the true you!
Located on the East Coast, North Island, New Zealand, elevated above a remote coast line with optimal views of the surrounding environment, orientated due North for maximum sunlight exposure and passive solar gain.
Although the design is utopian and generated by AI, it is considered possible to build within a feasible budget, and in a specific location. Time period of images are of middle winter, June, on a fine sunny clear late afternoon day. The outside temperature is 11 Degrees Celsius, the passive inside temperature is 22 Degrees Celsius- naturally warmed by sun light.
The simple organic form of the house merges with landscape, folding with natural topography, bending with seasonal sun path, and natural seasonal wind elements. Northeast winds keep the house cool over summer eliminating the need for air conditioning. Large internal volumes allow warm air to escape via top light windows during summer. Exposure to sunlight and passive solar gain naturally warms the interior of the house during winter eliminating the need for an active heating system. The remaining energy requirements are provided by an off grid 3kW solar panel system. This house collects rain water for drinking from the roof, and has a natural wormarator waste system for sewage treatment.
The structure is made from high grade laminated structural pine, with each column and beam made separately to achieve the curving appearance of exterior and interior. The roof material is folding standing seem metal, which is durable and easy to bend with the organic form of the roof shapes.
Materiality is modified Pinus Radiata (Pine) for exterior cladding treated with natural vinegar for stability and longevity, exposed thermal mass (concrete) on Southern locations for texture and heat retention, thermally broken insulated exposed polished concrete flooring for passive solar gain, laminated pine timber for interior finishings, and a combination of timber and aluminum joinery for windows and doors.
