The focus of this project is on the interaction between the choice of material and the use of materials and the architectural, technical and ecological requirements to be met during conception and implementation by reduction, reusing and recycling. This project is made to create affordable living space in the growing urban area 1100 Vienna, Kurbadstraße, in timber construction, whereby the focus of the design is mainly on the circular construction.
The first idea was to create a place where people can greet, chat and also spend time together as soon as they leave their apartment. This area of communication is one area, which receives light and is surrounded by plants.
The construction site that is getting more and more wider from north to south and at the same time, on west and east sides it is completely open. It was precisely this special feature of the building site that became the starting point in the concept development. In the first step, the main idea was to use the light coming from the south in the common areas of the building, so it has bright common areas, where people would like to spend time. Because of the idea of making sensible use of this north-south direction, stair core is placed on the north facade. So the apartments are either on east or west facades. The common areas oriented to the south facade have the double floor height. The last step is the "Green House", which gives the common area another function. Thanks to the Green House, the atrium and all our common areas, which are located in the middle of the building, use the energy they produce.
There is a bicycle storage room, an underground parking area and commercial uses on the ground floor. (Underground parking area was menditory and the size of the ramp was given.)The double-sided ramp already occupies most of the ground floor area. In order to use the remaining area sensibly, it was important to create a transition between the communal and commercial areas. The foyer is also used as a common area. The commercial area and the foyer area were partially separated by glass elements. On the first regular floor we see an atrium that covers the entire area in the centre of the building. This atrium, thanks to the Green House and the glass facade on the south, takes the natural daylight. On the eastern front there is four apartements for couples. The apartment next to the elevator is designed as a family apartment. On the western front there are also three family apartments. Every apartement has their own loggia. On the second regular floor, we see that the loggies correspond to the first regular floor. Here the floor plan is mirrored. Apartment floor plans and sanitary rooms are located identically on top of each other to enable an efficient installation of the technic and a structural system, which is economical.
The photovoltaic panels located directly on the roof convert the light of the sun directly into electrical energy. The photovoltaic self-produced electrical energy is used by the heat pump. This produced energy is most often used for the underfloor heating in the apartements. The windows of the Green House is openable to create a natural ventilation inside and reduce the heat in the summer and to compensate for winter by using sunlight in the most logical way. The awning, which is placed on the greenhouse, is heat protection in the summer on daytime and thermal protection in winter at night. To combine the reinforcing steel X construction on the south side of the building with the Green House concept, the plants and ivy grow over the reinforcing steel and on the glass facade. This part is a climate buffer in the summer. The seating areas makes this also a part of the common area.
One of the main ideas were also to create a pure timber construction. In the contruction of the timber buildings, so many metallic connections are carried out. In order to reduce the number of such connections, it is used wood-wood connector for ceilings and walls, which is called X-Fix. X-Fix enables a pull- and push-resistant connection of CLT ceilings and walls.X-Fix connections can be loosened by drilling, so that the parts of the building can be used or recycled when the building is no more in use.
