Site plan, ground floor plan, form and functions generated from neighborhood strategies

The neighborhood strategy maps derived from the different issues in the area, helped draw up a better proposal for a masterplan of the area. The neighborhood is then divided into some primary zones which act as site forces along with the existing environmental forces. This new site context demands for certain functions to be prevalent and incorporated in this housing project and also determines the form of the project. The ground floor plan, elevations and section show how these functions are addressed.

An overview of the entire project with façade treatment and landscape detailing is shown here. A plaza with adjoining shops and cafes greets pedestrians with abundant activities and provides opportunities for open markets and shaded seating for passersby. A sunken courtyard directly accessible from the plaza leads to the basement where people will find more shops and restaurants and a prayer space which is naturally ventilated by light wells. Bridges connect the two forms and gives experiential feeling to the user as it maintains visual connection from the plaza, sunken courtyard and all terraces which look out towards the plaza. The first two levels are mainly comprised of public functions which invite and integrate the whole neighborhood with an abundance of varied activities and then the rest of the floors comprise of housing apartments and communal amenities for the families living in the apartments. The material for the project is mainly brick and concrete for the structure. The orientation and form ensure as much natural ventilation as possible, as such is necessary for the climatic context of our country. Every housing apartment above have ample recessed windows and balconies to maximize wind circulation but cut down the intensity of the sun.
