For this project, we were asked to redesign a plot on a masterplan for the upcoming SHAMS media city in Sharjah. Our main focus was to increase walkability and connectivity to encourage our visitors interactions with one another.
Accessibility, connectivity and walkability are promoted by the creation of alleyways and suitable sized central plazas. The alleyways are lined with shading by trees, water features as well as serving as shop and building access'.
We started off by lifting the entire mass. From there we connected the more important areas to one another via nodes. This served as a reference for walkability and accessibility as well as a guide for our alleyways.
Perspective sketches showing the use of alleyways for visitor interaction. Lining the bottom of our buildings with seating areas that are shaded by both the building cantilever as well as vegetation.
Top perspective showing the main entrance to the central plaza. Different walk areas have different ground textures, in part to absorb heat, and to also break away from a monotonous view.
A play on urban furniture. We made sure that seating areas are big enough to be shared by a number of people at the same time. By also adding hidden light fixtures, we were able to illuminate the areas to be more inviting.
