The poet Lee Sang-Hwa had a great impact on society in terms of the development of modern literature and national resistance during the Japanese occupation, and it is worthwhile to create a space to recognize and honor him in order to pass on these achievements to future generations. By selecting the representative work 'Does Spring Come Even in the Deprived Fields' from among Lee's works, I began to focus on building a space based on literary expressions from the poem, and tried to project his 'romantic' tendency to search for an ideal home into the space. As a result, I was able to derive UTOPIA from his search for the ideal and proceeded with the work using it as a concept.

Main Concept: Utopia

In the poem 'Does Spring Come to the Deprived Fields', Idealization is struggling between the reality and the ideal, aiming for the ideal. In order to realize this as a space, I took out some phrases from the poem and used them as a device to materialize the concept. / [UTOPIA] In the idealized masterpiece "Spring Comes to the Stolen Fields Spring symbolizes liberation and utopia. An utopia is a place that is far away from reality, and through the device of 'disconnection' from the outside world in the gray city of Site 2, the users of the space can be induced to engage in an act of 'reversal', and through this, they can come back and maximize their pleasure in the space called Utopia. / [SUN LIGHT] "I get sunshine on my whole body" is an act that occurs in blue skies and green fields, which can be talked about as utopia. Therefore, we devised a device to introduce 'sunlight' into the entire interior of the building and spatialized it, and it was converted into indirect light through reflectors instead of direct light. Through this, a chain of changes in the mass occurs. / [GAP] The concept of the space between the reality represented by the city outside the walls of the building and the utopia inside the building allows us to experience the anguish the poet felt between them.

Concept: Light&View

How can we translate the phrase "sunshine on the whole body" from the Main Concept into space? The whole body means the whole building, and we thought about how to give sunlight to the whole building. / 1. Light is a One Directional Type by default, but but we need to exchange it for an Omni Directional Type for #2 in the Main Concept. The first concept I came up with for this was 'Reflect', we need a vessel that effectively captures the reflected light. 2. A shape called a "circle" is any distance from the center to the circumference, radius are all equal. In other words, when light is reflected from the center in all directions, you will receive the same amount of light in all directions. 3. Human vision is fundamentally based on perspective vision, not parallel vision. Therefore, when we look up at the sky, we will be able to maximize our sense of awe in an offsetting, growing mass rather than in a straight line of mass.

Concept: Place For Meditation

1.When we think of materials, there are some that we can imagine as being heavy and substantial, even without hearing or touching them. When such a material, such as concrete, encounters light, the light also takes on the weight of the material and is transformed into a heavy light, which is further maximized by the heavy contrast with the shadows. Because of the weight of the material, we naturally derive a solemn air. 2. Rather than a normal environment with light coming from all directions When we are in a space with limited light coming from a specific direction, we naturally ‘focus’ on that light. If the light is coming from upwards, we will naturally focus on the upward direction, and this will naturally produce a reverent air through admiration. 3. Sound in space, especially reverberation, becomes longer in length and less intense as the area of the space increases and the height of the space increases. The sound reflected from a vertically high space is a long reverberant sound with a light concentration, which can bring out something similar to the sense of holiness in a cathedral or religious building. This naturally leads to contemplation and commemoration of the figure. 4. The reason the entrance to the contemplation space is north-facing is that when you enter the space from the north, you are directly facing the three remaining directions in which the sun rises. This is also a device to maximize inversion. 'Suspect' through the sunlight that faces you when you walk into the space with your back to the sun and then turn around.

Mass Process/Site Analysis/Zonning Process

[Mass Process] 1. Create a circular mass to symbolize utopia and separate user and administrator paths. 2. Union between Masses for Movement 3. Mass Extrude for the ground floor 'contemplation area' and loading dock 4. Offset of circular masses per floor to let in sunlight on all floors [Zonning Process] 1. Segment your site by separating major and minor roads 2. The primary site assigns user traffic to the secondary site, and the administrator's route is assigned to the secondary road 3. Place loading docks and mass along assigned routes 4. Exterior landscaping and programming

Site Plan

[About Bridge] : The back of the building is separated from the site by a retaining wall. This can be circulated and reconnected from the circulation within the rising building, creating a connection between the site and the natural circulation between the two. [About Wall] : When two curves are facing each other, a sense of "immersion" is created between them. By varying the curvature to the entrance based on the angle of the road, the building naturally draws pedestrians into the building.

Floor Plans

[1F] When you enter the main entrance on the first floor, there are restrooms and core spaces on the left, and the main hall on the right after the ticket office. After passing through the main hall, you will find the meditation space in the center and the stairs to the next floor at the end of the hall. [2F] The second floor is for permanent exhibits. In order for SkyLight to be reflected on the entire second floor, including the permanent exhibition space, the radius of the void in the center of the second floor is 600mm smaller than the radius of the third floor. 600mm smaller than the 3rd floor to allow. [3F] The third floor is a space for special exhibitions, so the floor height was calculated to be twice as high as the other floors. The center void is 600mm larger in radius than the second floor, A ramp to the fourth floor is located at the beginning of the floor. [4F] As the third floor is a special exhibition space, the floor height is double that of the other floors, so the office building can be organized into two floors from top to bottom. Passing through the gap space formed along the ramp on the third floor leads to the fourth floor, which has an exterior terrace and a bridge over the exterior retaining wall.

Section&Elevation Plan

The last verse of the poem creates a sharp descending image. Therefore, I wanted to create a descending image on the last floor of the building. However, since the lamp is rising from the third floor to the fourth floor, the image is ascending rather than descending. However, I tried to solve this by introducing light from the lamp path. When an opening is cut horizontally with the ceiling line in the lamp space, the light volume that is felt on the descending motion line widens to form a descending volume on the ascending motion line. This was solved by incising the light into openings that were more angled than the angle of the building ramp, allowing more light to enter as the pathway progressed. This extends to the design of the building's exterior facade.
