Eden Yron & Yoel Gaft, Tel-Aviv University The project is located at the School of Mechanical Engineering at Tel-Aviv University, designed by one of the greatest architects of the 20th century, Louis I. Kahn. A large-scale brutalist structure consists of three vast empty spaces, which are roofed by concrete cycloid barrel vaults. They lit at their extremities by cylindrical-shaped lighting slots emitting a soft, non-dazzling light. Additional illumination for the space is provided through an upper slit in the barrel vault ceiling. he project offers a re-use for Kahn's structure in an era of social and technological changes. With the development of technology and increasing questioning of traditional art forms, we seek to experiment with the visual and sensory effects of artificial light. The architectural installation inspired by the monumental barrel vault and translated into semi-translucent polycarbonate arched chambers projecting a prism of colors using natural and artificial lighting. Eliciting both a strong sensorial and emotional response in viewers, the installation transitions from a visual experience into a bodily one, underscoring the notion of color as a material, physical phenomenon and asking to evoke a range of thoughts and feelings. It creates a synthesis of luminosity, reflections and shadows along with the rigidness of the static concrete structure.
