Long grass pavilion

Year: 2022

Category: Landscape & Urbanism

Long Grass Pavilion is the result of a team 24-hour charette during the University of Idaho 2022 summer London green architecture program. The team consisted of myself, Reggie Mace, and Mariel Jasso, and we set out to design a serpentine pavilion at Kensington Garden, which is known for hosting temporary pavilions from renowned emerging architects each year. On visiting the site, we took note of how the people moved through the space as well as all of the fixed aspects, such as the plant life, hardscape elements, contours and elevation changes. As the pavilion is set to be temporarily erected in the warm summer months, the design needed to focus on providing comfort by way of shading and air flow. Shelter from rain, while a common occurrence, was not prioritized as we wanted to strive for phenomenological experience when visiting, rain or shine. The name, design and experience of the pavilion is all meant to get people to think about symbiosis with nature. Rather than design architecture to fight against the climate, we wanted it to embrace it and give people the opportunity to be face-to-face with the air, water and vegetation. With the ultimate goal for them to gain empathy towards nature, and show people not to seek to control but to live in harmony with nature.
