Challenge

We find ourselves in an era where the once seemingly opposing forces of technology and nature are now being brought together in innovative and impactful ways. While AI is often seen as an artificial and mechanical tool, it is now being used to bring the organic and natural elements of nature into our built environment. This creates a paradox, as the technology that is so often associated with industrialization and progress is now being utilized to bring customized and personal experience.


The theme of this competition was Artificial Nature. Arch Hive invited architects, designers, and technology enthusiasts to explore the potential of artificial intelligence in shaping the future of our built environment. Entrants were encouraged to push the boundaries of traditional built environment and utilize AI imagery to incorporate nature into otherwise mundane structures. The top entries drew on the full potential of AI assistance to push the boundaries of art and design, with some even suggesting potential adaptations to real world applications.

Artificial Nature 2

While buildings stand as tangible manifestations of creativity, it is the ideas that underpin them that truly shape our world. Ideas have the ability to '''ignite change, challenge conventions, and inspire entire communities'''.
      
      The iConcept Award is inaugurated to celebrate excellence in '''UNBUILT''' architecture and design. This award is given to individuals and firms that made significant contribution to the profession through pushing the boundaries the theoretical concepts and inventing ground breaking notions.

Ideas for Change

The iConcept Award is open to participants from all around the world. Anyone passionate about architecture and design can become a candidate for the iConcept Award. To enter, entrants must sign up for the competition, and submit their projects through Arch Hive's online platform. Entries must be '''UNBUILT''' projects.

Architects Against Housing Alienation is a collective formed in 2021 that started Not for Sale! as a campaign to end housing alienation. The campaign is centered on the work of ten teams, from across the land now known as ca
ada, who have created ten demands and proposals. The collective include activists, architects, and advocates who bring expertise, experience, connection, and compassion to issues of housing justice. This collaborative effort aims to add momentum, new synergies, and a shared focus to the ongoing and remarkable work to create a radically new housing system.

Who is AAHA?

Halifax is in crisis. The number of unhoused people is growing exponentially due to the cost of living and lack of affordable housing, but at the same time there are numerous government-owned surplus properties which have been sitting vacant for up to decades. AAHA demand that the government make these assets available for public good through the development of affordable housing. The jury is seeking innovative social housing projects that utilize these vacant surplus properties to fill in gaps in the socio-urban fabric of Halifax. Winning entries will be showcased in Dalhousie University, Halifax, as well as receiving a share of the $1,000 prize fund.

Arch Hive is committed to offering emerging architectural talent the opportunity to design and present innovative projects, challenging each year’s winners to develop original designs for a temporary, outdoor installation at various sites around the globe. This year, Arch Hive has partnered with '''Wesgroup''' to prepared this document for the purpose of arranging the following competition.

Initiative

Wesgroup has grown to become one of Western Canada’s largest private real estate companies. Our operations are vertically integrated, encompassing construction, land acquisition, finance, design, leasing, marketing, sales, and property management. All activities are handled in house. Our focus is growing our Income-Producing Property portfolio, which is located primarily in Metro Vancouver.

About Wesgroup

Pavilions are not just structures; they are transformative elements within public spaces that have the power to shape our urban environments, create memorable experiences, and foster a sense of community. The jury are searching for innovative projects that use design to refresh the current pedestrian experience, bringing them a new found sense of belonging and placemaking. Winning entries will be put forward for consideration for construction as well as receiving a share of the $20,000 prize fund.

In her book, 'Domestic Revolution,' Ruth Goodman proposes that a seemingly small change in the way Victorian households fired up their iron range (from wood to coal) fundamentally altered not just our domestic comforts, but our entire world. This domestic demand for more coal led to the expansion of mining, engineering, construction, and industry, kick-starting, pushing, and fueling the Industrial Revolution. Similarly, small shifts in our day-to-day practices can trigger something big, '''something unprecedented--something that spreads across the globe and revolutionizes the way we live.'''

Domestic Revolution

Almost every suburban homes have a unique living space: the patio. This space continues to be at the center of legal controversies and neighborhood disputes, as it occupies the ambiguous space between indoor and outdoor, private and public. Even though patio has the potential to embrace both the indoor and outdoor activities, it often finds itself in neglect in many suburban homes. How can we revolutionize this ubiquitous program through an intervention?

The Forgotten Room

For this competition, entrants are encouraged to envision an installation that can make a big impact in the way we use patio. Can this seemingly small part of the house change the way we live? Perhaps we have not discovered the full potential to utilize such a complex intersection of social boundaries. Your solution should be innovative, feasible, and have the potential to create positive change when replicated on a larger scale.

“Bali Houses” series are inspired by the unique landscape and bamboo architecture of Bali. This project reflects how architecture and nature blends together in an intimately connected way. Terracing integrated into the design allows for a great overlook of the green rice terraces and lush landscapes. Openings allow air, natural sounds and light into this organic spaces.
