Reinstatement of Pasar Seni & The Cultivation of Art Culture in Malaysia

Year: 2022

Reinstating the identity of Pasar Seni to serve the community while providing a platform for local artists and the community to seek insights and inspiration, along with improving the art culture in Malaysia. Overtaken by the tourist industries, it is no longer serving the community, losing its sense of place and identity, and where the Arts are being neglected. The objective is to cultivate the art culture in Malaysia by bringing art accessible to all walks of life and congregating all the community together to achieve community essence.

Historical Memory Downlane

River Klang is a river that flows through Kuala Lumpur and Selangor in Malaysia and eventually flows into the Straits of Malacca. One of the sought-after tourist spots in Kuala Lumpur where the historical Central Market is situated beside it. However, greeneries are disappearing, covering the landscape with more concrete than ever, buildings are demolished for unnecessary purposes, and the locals are slowly being flooded over by tourists.

In front of the Central Market and facing the main street (Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lok), where once a commercialized plaza, turned into a vehicle car-park area in the 90s, caused heavy traffic and an eye-sore of open concrete space. However, given the circumstances, it is a very important node point and the main entrance into Central Market. Thus, while bringing back the old glory of this space, a sunken garden plaza is proposed in front of the Central Market. Where existing festivities can be held and given the usage of space back to the locals.
