With Strachan Avenue and Wellington Street becoming a major intersection, and the open stretch of green space connecting Stanely Park to Toronto’s lakefront, this site is an ideal location for a Toronto Museum. Within 5 minutes walking distance from historical Fort York pedestrians can take a walk across the retail / café boardwalk for a direct connection to the museum.
Additionally, the application of buildings together creates a network of courtyards connecting mixed-use programs. Like meandering through a museum, from exhibition to exhibition; the interconnections of courtyards allow pedestrians to wander through the site, green space to green space from any entrance. These green space differ depending on the relationship to its adjacent buildings.
On upper levels, programs related to each other are connected through above ground corridors that lead to community spaces to purpose each activity. The two office buildings are connected to each other through an event space. These community spaces are represented as voids in my building mass. Likewise, residential units are connected by the connection of a library, daycare and fitness centre with the convenience of the green park adjacent.
Similarly, as visitors of the museum enter through the courtyard and move up from exhibitions, they can cross to the neighbouring building, an extension of the museum. The extension of the museum shares a space with the innovative hub industry. The threshold between programs is a gallery space for the creative industry to display their work. When visitors are completed with the museum they can make their way down to another courtyard space.
The overarching thesis of this project is the network of courtyards. Whether it be lead from the mix-used buildings on the site, or pedestrians entering from Stauchan Avenue, Wellington Street, the green park, or from Fort York historical site.
